It's that time of year again.
As Autumn approaches, fireworks season is amongst us, with events such as Diwali, Halloween, Bonfire Night, and New Year’s Eve before you know it!
Fireworks season can be a stressful time for many pets of all shapes and sizes and this can negatively impact you too. Understandably, a lot of pet owners are filled with dread as we enter this period. Don’t despair, British Pet Insurance are here to support you during this challenging time.
Tips For Keeping Your Pets Safe
Here are our top tips to help you and your pets have a safe and pleasant fireworks season for many years to come.
- Desensitise
From the moment you take your pet home, playing firework noises whilst giving them plenty of treats and praise will help them associate the sound of fireworks with something positive. Some breeders will play various sounds to litters of puppies and kittens to gear them up for scenarios they will encounter in the outside world!
- Exercise
Before the evening draws in, make sure your cat, dog, hamster, or horse has the chance to burn off some energy! Whether it’s a walk, run, or a play session with their favourite toy, burning off excess energy can help reduce anxiety levels.
- Observe
You know your pet better than anyone; they might be trying to tell you that they need comforting or require space. Each pet has a different coping mechanism, so acting accordingly is important.
- Environment
Make sure your pets are as cosy as possible. Ensure all curtains and blinds are drawn and stable doors are closed to block out the sights and sounds of fireworks. You can also play soothing music to help your pet relax.
- Composure
Pets are incredibly receptive to your body language and emotions. If they can see that you are calm and happy, this will positively affect them.
- Distract
Give your pet their favourite toy or offer them a tasty treat like a puzzle as a fun distraction!
We hope you have a safe and pleasant fireworks season from the Petcover Group team.
