We love hearing updates about the pets we cover, but some stories truly tug at the heartstrings. We’re sharing the story of Ravello, a spirited 5-year-old Warmblood gelding, and his owner, Caris.
Ravello is often described by Caris as “basically a big dog” and a happy soul who loves playing in the field. However, even the most energetic and healthy horses can face sudden, life-threatening challenges.
The day started like any other, but when Caris brought Ravello in from the field, she immediately noticed he wasn’t his usual, playful self. Sensing something was wrong, she called the vet out immediately.
After several tests, the diagnosis was every horse owner’s nightmare: severe colitis.
Colitis is an inflammation of the colon that can cause rapid dehydration and systemic illness. For Ravello, the situation was critical. He was rushed into intensive care, where he spent a week fighting for his life. His treatment was intense and exhausting:
“I was very worried not knowing if he’d pull through,” Caris remembers. “The vets poured their heart and soul into taking care of him.”
After a week of uncertainty, Caris finally received the call she had been praying for. Ravello was looking brighter. Against the odds, he made a remarkable recovery and was cleared to come home on 23rd December. It was, quite literally, a Christmas miracle.
While the emotional toll of a sick horse is heavy, the financial side can be equally daunting. Intensive care, specialist medications, and 24-hour veterinary monitoring are essential for survival but the costs can escalate into the thousands very quickly.
Many owners wonder if it’s better to simply set money aside each month rather than paying for a policy. However, as Ravello’s sudden illness shows, a crisis can strike at any time.
